Since the early 1990s, Swedish artist Gustaf Broms has developed a symbolic language to better understand himself. His creative journey has spanned from working as an assistant to photographer Richard Avedon in New York to pursuing his own photography, filmmaking, sculpture, collage, music, and ultimately the field for which he is best known: performance art. His creative work and diverse artworks are like pieces of a puzzle that, together, form not only the man known as Gustaf Broms but also reflect the broader human experience of existence. Broms’s ambitious goals express a sense of openness and a desire to share a truly experimental attitude. Through this, his role as an artist grows larger while remaining consciously undefined. His varied forms of expression reveal a single underlying theme, posing the same essential question: where, exactly, does the “self” reside within the human mind? Who am I, and what tools do I need to discover that?
